Philadelphia is Hollywood East
SOUTH PHILADELPHIA - August 23, 2006 - One star came here to debut one movie, another Philadelphia story is set to open and a third will soon be shooting here.
When Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson stepped onto the red carpet on Wednesday night, his fans were ready. The Rock came to South Philadelphia for the premiere of his new movie, “Gridiron Gang.”
“The movie represents what the city is,” explained Johnson. “It’s a fighting city. It’s a city that never gives up and that’s exactly what Gridiron Gang is . It’s a story about hope for kids who lost hope long ago, who challenge themselves in prison and they say, ‘We’re never gonna be called losers again.’ And they never give up.”
The new movie “Invincible ” also has a message of hope. It stars Mark Wahlberg as real-life Eagles fan Vince Papale, whose dream came true in 1976 when he became an Eagles player.
That movie was shot in Philadelphia, and premieres here on Thursday night. The film opens to the public on Friday.
“Actually, me and my cousin were extras in “Invincible,” which is really cool, so we’re waiting for that to come out Friday,” said Silvio Illisco of South Philadelphia.
The movie will join a long list of famous films including “Rocky” and “Sixth Sense” where the city with all of its landmarks becomes a character itself.
“The beauty of the city, historical monuments, the buildings - we’re talking about American history,” said actor and director Bill Duke. He announced on Wednesday plans to shoot and direct a new movie in Philadelphia next month. “Cover” will address HIV and AIDS in the African-American community.
“We are a very hands-on film office,” said Sharon Pinkenson, the brains behind making Philadelphia one of Hollywood’s favorite places. “First, in the sales pitch, we get them to come here and take a look, and convince them by telling them about the financial incentives.”
