More news on Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run Video game
After starring in the videogame-based “Doom” film and signing on for the big screen adaptation of Midway Games’ “Spy Hunter” movie for Universal Pictures, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is bringing the action full circle. The Rock will star in Midway Games’ summer 2006 Xbox and PlayStation 2 game, “Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run.”
The Rock provided both voiceover and motion-capture for the new game, which will serve as a prequel to the game franchise. The new game will feature The Rock as Alex Decker, the super spy for International Espionage Services. The game pits Decker against the evil NOSTRA corporation, which is out to steal his coveted ride, The Interceptor.
The Rock will attend the November 18 Los Angeles taping of the Spike TV “2005 VGAs” to personally introduce the world premiere of the “Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run” videogame trailer. He will also work closely with Midway Games to promote the new game next year, including making an appearance at the Los Angeles Electronic Entertainment Expo next summer.
According to “Spy Hunter” movie executive producer Adrian Askarieh, the script by Stuart Beattie (“The Pirates of the Caribbean”) is complete and the search for a director is on. The goal is to release the Universal Pictures “Spy Hunter” film in summer 2007.
“The movie will stand on its own, but cool elements from the game will be closely tied in, including some new villains,” said Askarieh.
“Midway is taking the classic Spy Hunter franchise in a powerful, new direction that will be led by the casting of The Rock as the game’s main character,” said Steve Allison, chief marketing officer, Midway. “For the first time in the Spy Hunter franchise we are allowing the player to step out from behind the wheel of the Interceptor and straight into the action.”
Allison said that utilizing The Rock gives both the game and the movie a common hero and also broadens the entertainment experience for both.
Of course, all of this is possible because The Rock is a big gamer. He grew up with games and used to have his own game column in an old magazine I was an editor for, “incite Videogames.” A growing number of Hollywood talent are getting deals like this not just because it’s good for their careers (there’s no better way to reach a huge male audience than a hit game), but because it’s also a cool gig. Anyone who’s played games knows that the thought of being in a game is a pretty cool thing. So look for more types of deals from other big actors, directors and Hollywood talent.
